The Beatification of W.C. Fields?

American Bystander reports that Cardinal Ratzinger may be our next Pope. But the Nyok Times, courtesy of the Associated Press, reports today:

Two Belgians eager to see their countryman, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, as pontiff held aloft a banner reading ''Godfried for Pope'' on Wednesday. Vatican police escorted them off St. Peter's Square.

Godfrey Daniels!! Is this evidence that the Spirit of W.C. Fields is attempting to work a wee miracle?

Perhaps not.

No no no Flaky Foont--Godfried Danieels is the next-but-one pope! I had precisely the same reaction, and realized that it was too good to be true. After a bit of Euro-reinforcement under Benedict XVI, Europe will pick a son of Olde Lotharingen for the next Bishop of Rome. ETA is 2012.

Considering the Punkt-ness of your prognostication re Ratzinger, I daresay you're right.

But if the next conclave's vote on the Lowlander is negative, will it be an outward and visible sign of an Ethiopian in the fuel supply?
